THE BIG READ

The WSCC Big Read is a community-wide project that involves a network of collaborative partners across the college district.  One central focus is Idlewild, a town huge in the history  of American jazz and blues.  The Big Read project focuses on the natural connections betweenTheir Eyes Were Watching God, and the music scene in Idlewild, with musical performances accompanying speakers, panel discussions, and book talks across the district.  Our goal is to increase civic and cultural awareness and foster a greater sense of community through the enactment and reenactment of culture.

Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zorra Neale Hurston's vibrant novel presents Janie Mae Crawfords, growth from a voiceless teenage girl into a woman who takes charge of her own destiny.

We have several programs for the Big Read:

Question and answer session with Dr. West Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 2:00 P.M.

Question and answer session will be hosted at the  Manistee Public Library meeting room in Manistee.  Dr. Genevieve West, associate professor of English at Ferris State University and author of the book, Zorra Neale Hurston and American Literary Culture will share her insights and lead a discussion with interested readers of Hurston's book.

After reading Their Eyes Were Watching God, come be a part of a book discussion.  Tell us what moves you, what puzzles you, what you like, and even what you do not like about the book.  hear what other people have to say.  Help us all gain a richer, deeper understanding of Their Eyes Were Watching God.
